C.L.A.S.P. is a program of Longwood University created to provide academic, socio-emotional, & profession-based support. This program was founded through Longwood professors and faculty in seeing
a need for increased support and counsel for students of minoritized backgrounds (and sought to improve the retention rates of these students).
The program provides academic assistance (tutoring), academic coaching (sessions on college, profession, mental health, and life-based skills), host events targeted in areas of professional and social growth, and
conducting of psycho-educational/support groups (Men’s/Women’s Empowerment & Queer Minority Support Group).
Primary Internship Roles:
Case Manager:
Constructed plans for client’s intended goals throughout semester, applying the problem-solving model, empowerment theory, and person-in-environment approach.
Conducted case management sessions through meeting with clients weekly, biweekly, or monthly (depending on client’s situation) to discuss academic performance, as well as physical and emotional health.
Submitted SOAP Notes for each session.
Queer Minority Support Group Facilitator:
Constructed lesson plans for each session using empowerment theory and person-in-environment approach.
Created flyers and posters, as well as managed social media accounts to spread awareness and advertise for the support group.
Facilitated case management sessions weekly (topics range from self-care, identity, and social supports).
This internship also involved networking in the community to provide resources for academic, professional, and social events like accessible tutors, mentors, or outings to meet each individual’s need. The internship also involved taking SOAP notes for the Women’s Empowerment Group sessions.
