Survey Design

Research Question worksheet                                                                                      Nathan Brubaker

Research Question: If families participate in any way, with these activities, then what is their level of involvement in their child’s learning?

Dependent Variable: How much were you involved in the activity? (scale of 0-10; 0 being not at all and 10 being a great amount)

Independent Variable: On average, how many hours a week do you work?

  1. 0-10 hours
  2. 11-20 hours
  3. 21-30 hours
  4. 31-40 hours
  5. 41-50 hours
  6. 51 or more hours
  7. Prefer not to answer

These questions are good because they include the time that the parent is involved in work whether it is working at home or out of the home. This shows how if a parent has more free time what is their availability to participate in these activities?

For the survey, the questions that are most important to us should be first to avoid the survey taker skipping questions or not answering them thoroughly. The questions in general should be short and to the point. There should be some questions that are open-ended, some that should have a 1-10 option, and some that are multiple-choice.
