The best practices for survey research are to make sure your items are clear, short, and
relevant. You should also avoid double barreled questions, negative items as well as biased terms and items. Lastly, your respondents must be competent and willing to answer the questions. For this research my research question is Do Family Fun Time Activities affect Family Involvement? To operationalize my dependent variable, I will be asking, “Did this activity encourage your family to interact with one another while completing it?” The individuals will then answer on a scale of 0-10. To operationalize my independent variable, I will be asking, “What is the highest level of education you have received?” The respondents will then answer by choosing one of the following, less than high school, high school diploma or GED, some college, associate degree, bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, above master’s degree, and additional education other than previously listed. Using what we have learned in class I know these are good and well written questions because the questions are relevant to our research, the questions are clear, there is no bias to the questions, and there are no double-barreled questions.
