Reflection on Statistics

Sociology 345 and 346 at Longwood University are consecutive courses that run from Fall to Spring.  These courses cover methodology as well as analyzing data for social scientists.  The purpose of these classes were to provide us with the ability to effectively read and evaluate research as well as design our own research.  With these skills, I am able to understand and conduct the fundamentals of behavioral research.

Sociology 345 covered the basics of methodology and techniques as it applies to social scientific research.  This included research design and data collection.  As far as research design, we were taught how to form a concept and effectively represent that in different research methods.  The class conducted a university-wide survey about the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on college students.  Through this study, we were taught how to create a good research question, review existing literature, construct and distribute a survey, and analyze the findings.

The real-life application of this study aided me in visualizing how this type of work applies in professional settings.  Social and behavioral research is used to understand how people function in society.  The creation and implementation of accurate and reliable research requires unbiased and effective methods.  This type of research is important because of the role it plays in guiding professionals in best practices for their discipline based on data.  Many places are adapting evidence-based practices, which essentially relies on scientific data.

Sociology 346 covered social statistics.  We were taught how to compute descriptive and inferential statistics by hand and in statistical computer softwares.  The course also covered hypothesis testing and analyzing the results.

Statistics is used in professional settings as an analysis of different aspects of their company.  Sales, payroll, and other departments rely on data analysis to gauge progress in their company’s efforts.  Social statistics can play a big role in businesses as well as society.

In a larger context, both data analysis and statistics play a big role in the functioning of society.  Professionals use social research to understand how people act and react to certain phenomena.  This data aids people in making the best decisions for their clients, coworkers, and company based on research.

The information I have learned from these courses will guide me in my professional life.  Statistics is an analytical tool that will be useful in many careers.  When I choose to further my education, this knowledge of research methods and data analysis will further my potential as a candidate and student.
