New trial database: ARTstor

Especially exciting for those faculty and students in the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences department, we are excited to offer a trial of ARTstor until April 20th 2014. Please try it out and give us your feedback!

ARTstor is a digital library of more than one million images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences. While we have the trial, you are encouraged to register for an account so you can access the digital library from off-site, create and save image groups and add personal notes. To register, click the “Register” link in the “Welcome to Artstor” box in the upper right corner of the Digital Library. A user must provide an email address and password of their choice.

PsycTESTS and PsycTHERAPY on Trial!

The Library has a 30 day trial to two new Psychology databases. PsycTESTS provides access to psychological tests, measures, scales, and other assessments as well as descriptive and administrative information. The database offers links to a variety of materials describing tests in peer-reviewed literature, technical reports, and dissertations as well as links to related peer-reviewed literature describing test development, review, and use. PsycTherapy includes more than 300 videos featuring therapy demonstrations showing clinicians working with individuals, couples, and families. Please try out both and let us know what you think about PsycTESTS and PsycTHERAPY.

Try Out Films on Demand!

VIVA institutions are offering a 30-day free trial of Films on Demand streaming video. Films on Demand is a web-based digital video library delivery service that allows you to view streaming videos from Films for the Humanities & Sciences, PBS, BBC, and many other channels. This service makes it easier to incorporate various educational programs into Blackboard and other distance learning courseware. Please go to the Films on Demand guide page for instructions to search and view films and  provide us with your feedback.

Films on Demand Streaming Video Trial

Films on DemanLongwood users are invited to explore Films on Demand educational streaming videos in a free trial offered through VIVA (The Virtual Library of Virginia) for the month of May.  The database offers high-quality video and multimedia from Films for the Humanities and Sciences, Cambridge Educational, Meridian Education, and Shopware. Browse by subject and search title or video segment by keyword, producer or standard.

Go to the Trial Databases guide to access Films on Demand, which is only open to Longwood faculty, staff and students through May 31, 2011.

EBSCO Discovery Service Trial

EBSCO Discovery ServiceHave you ever wanted to look for journal articles AND  books from a single search box? The Greenwood Library invites you to try the “one-stop” EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) on trial through May 2011.

This search tool allows you to use the familiar EBSCOhost interface to search the Library’s catalog and many of our article databases at one time. Test it from the library home page.

EDS surveyWe hope you’ll also tell us your impressions. The Greenwood Library is considering purchasing this product.  Your feedback will help us determine if EDS is a useful tool for conducting research at Longwood University.

Here are a few things to note about the trial:

  • It searches many but not all of the Library’s databases.
  • All EBSCOhost databases are included.
  • It searches JSTOR and several other journal collections.
  • Many but not all of the Library’s electronic books are included.
  • Books, CDs and DVDs added after January 2011 are not included.
  • Results include both print and online resources.

Business E-Book Collection Trials

The Greenwood Library has 30-day trials of two business e-book collections.  Both trials run into the first week of December.

  • Books 24×7 BusinessPro and FinancePro includes publications from AMACOM, ASTD, Bloomberg Press, Harvard Business School, John Wiley & Sons, Jossey- Bass, McGraw-Hill, MIT Press, Oxford University Press and more.
  • Safari Business Books Online includes over 1,900 titles from well-known publishers in the field, including AMACOM, Addison-Wesley, Wharton School and more.

Major Historical Sources Available for Trial Access

The Greenwood Library is evaluating a number of major archival sources that support research in a wide variety of disciplines, including history, political science, sociology, communication studies, language and literature, and more.

Most of the trials run through the first week of December. You may access all of them on our new Trial Databases guide and provide your feedback. The databases include:

  • Times Digital Archive – every issue of The Times (London) from 1785 to 1985.
  • British Literary Manuscripts Online, c. 1660-1900 – poems, plays, essays, novels, diaries, journals, correspondence and other manuscripts from the Restoration through the Victorian era.
  • 19th Century Masterfile – index to Anglo-American materials published prior to 1925, including Poole’s Index to Periodical Literature, 1802-1906, Stead’s, Royal Society scientific publications and Swem’s Virginia Index 1619-1930.
  • German Biographical Archive (DBA I) – articles from 265 sources published from 1707 to 1913 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, former or partly German-speaking areas such as East Prussia, Silesia, Pomerania and Livland.

NBC News Archive Database Trial

Greenwood Library has a free trial of the NBC News Archives on Demand database for the rest of the Fall 2010 semester.

NBC News Archives on Demand is specifically tailored to the needs of college and university students and instructors. The 26 “course” collections include Biology, Psychology, Forensic Sciences, Environmental Sciences, U.S. History, Business, Economics, Urban Studies, Women’s Studies, and many more.

The trial will run through December 10, 2010 and may be accessed only from an on-campus computer. To access and comment on the NBC News on Demand and other active database trials, visit the Trial Databases guide at http://libguides.longwood.edu/trials.
