Free webinar: “Getting a Grip on Your Student Loans”

In this webinar Heather Jarvis, Student Loan Expert, breaks down the process step-by-step, helping viewers:

  • to understand what kind of loans they have and why it makes a difference
  • to evaluate income-based repayment and other options
  • to learn simple steps to qualify for public service loan forgiveness

Cruising through Finals with Greenwood Library!

As you set sail into the last two weeks of the semester, the Library wants to support you with study breaks as you navigate the stormy waters of final exams!  Fort Finals is Sunday, April 20th – Wednesday, April 23, and Cookies for Finals is Thursday, April 24- Thursday, May 1.

Here’s what we have “on deck” during Fort Finals:

  • Healthy and sweet snacks start at 8pm each evening
  • Button making starts at 8pm each evening
  • Send a postcard to family and friends — we mail it for you!
  • Take a photo with friends in our cruise ship photo booth
  • Play a round of cornhole or take a yoga break in the Library
  • Outdoor yoga behind ARC residence hall on Wednesday, April 23 from 7-8pm.

Don’t forget your USB drives!

Due to security concerns, we can no longer check lost USB drives for contact information. At least once a week we’ll be turning these over to campus police, but as you can see, a lot of them look the same. You might consider putting it on a long string tied to your bag, or putting your name and/or email on the outside so we can contact you if we find it left behind.

Whatever method you use, be sure to backup your data frequently, in case you do lose your drive. Does anybody have any tips to remember your USB drive? Share them with us!

Special Collections Event: Harvill-Stevens Herbarium

Delphinium tricorne MichxOn Tuesday April 15, at 3:30 p.m., the Greenwood Library will host Ms. Erika Gonzalez, botanist and curator for the Harvill-Stevens Herbarium, for her talk “Harvill-Stevens Herbarium: A hidden historical collection at Longwood University”. 

Founded in 1963, the Herbarium is the largest collection of Virginia native plants in the world with 75,000 dry plant specimens, and is considered one of the finest and most significant collections of vascular plan specimens in the mid-Atlantic region.  This talk will showcase the Harvill-Stevens Herbarium which is one of Longwood’s best kept secrets. 

Attendees will have an opportunity to win one of three Barnes and Noble gift cards and light refreshments will be served. We hope to see you there!

New trial database: ARTstor

Especially exciting for those faculty and students in the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences department, we are excited to offer a trial of ARTstor until April 20th 2014. Please try it out and give us your feedback!

ARTstor is a digital library of more than one million images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences. While we have the trial, you are encouraged to register for an account so you can access the digital library from off-site, create and save image groups and add personal notes. To register, click the “Register” link in the “Welcome to Artstor” box in the upper right corner of the Digital Library. A user must provide an email address and password of their choice.

New Chat and Text

Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope you had a nice time off — while you were away, we’ve been busy!

We’re in the process of adopting some new technologies on our end, and this includes a new chat service. Most users will be unaffected, but we wanted to let you know of some of the changes:

  • It looks a little different! 
    Put your name in (if you want) and type your question. Someone will answer your question as soon as possible. If it is after hours and nobody is staffing The Desk, you will be able to search our Knowledge Base to see if anybody has ever asked your question before.
    You’ll also see “Ask Us” buttons in our guides and on our website; this will also launch the chat.

You’ll be able to rate your chat experience and email yourself a transcript when you are finished.
  • There’s a new text number: (434) 406-4957 
    You can text us any questions — when we’re available for chat, we will respond.
  • We no longer support outside chat clients
    So if you’re using AIM, GTalk, Yahoo or any other client, we apologize for the inconvenience. You are always welcome to email us at refdesk@longwood.edu if you do not like using our chat widget.

 

This new service has a lot of features on our end that will help us provide you with the best service possible. We welcome your feedback!

Weather – UPDATED

Edit: 1pm February 13:

  • Tomorrow (2/14) we will be open from 10am to 5pm.

Edit: 10am February 13:

  • The Library will be open 10am to 10pm today. If weather conditions worsen later in the day, we will post an update.

 

EDIT: As of 6pm on February 12, this is the information we have:

  • The Library will remain open until 8pm tonight.
  • The Library will be open from 10am tomorrow to 10pm, weather permitting.
  • FAB announced that the Campus Main line will suspend operation at 4:30pm today and will not be operating Thursday February 13.
