SOCL 220:
Identity portfolio part 1-
- Social identity wheel: age-20, gender identity/gender: female, national origin- American, sexual orientation- straight
- Two identities that I think are more important is the age, and national origin. Age is important to me because I surround myself with people my age or around my age. I also look at age as time frames in life; at the age 22 I will have my real world job, by the age of 25 I want to be married… and more. National origin is also important to me because it is where I am from, where I live, and what my beliefs are. Growing up with my mom living all over seas her childhood in many different countries, we were taught to love where we live, and our nation.
- Social identity goes with both age and national origin because you tend to surround yourself with people who have the same as you. You tend to have more in common and shared experiences that make your social group. Self esteem plays a big part in your age and how you feel about yourself at different points in your life. Around the teenage years a lot of children struggle with self esteem while going through high school/middle school. Going with the trouble of self esteem in high school, self efficacy also plays a big part. Teens want freedom, but often struggle with their parents of not having enough freedom they feel that they deserve; having a curfew and rules. Mattering is important with national origin, the feeling that you matter where you’re from, and where you live.
- As a future educator I think age is important because I will be teaching students at a young age, helping them start forming things about there childhood and life. national origin is also important because one of the subjects I will be teaching is history, and social science; which is them learning about America.
