Children’s Literature

Dr. Miskec’s decision to center this course around the study of adaptations made for an interesting semester. Through this theoretical framework, I was able to look at familiar works (Pippi Longstocking, Matilda, the Harry Potter series, etc.) with a new perspective and learn more about them as adaptive texts. Additionally, our assignment to write a scholarly article on some aspect of children’s literature adaptations proved to be one of the most academically rewarding endeavors.

For my project, I studied Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as a retrospective and prospective adaptation, arguing that it both rewards readers who have prior knowledge of the original series and can stand on its own as an introductory work to the world within the series. We submitted these papers to the journal Bookbird and while my piece was not accepted for their issue, they would like to publish it in a book along with several of my classmates’ work.
