Course 1: SOCL-233- Intro Social Inequality: In this class we learned about the different forms of inequality from a social science stand point. We had to write papers weekly dealing with different topics given to us. One in particular I remember writing about was a paper on the social inequalities in the very beginning.
Course 2: SOCL-205- Deviance: In this course we learned about the different kinds of Deviance and how they occur in society. We learned about Deviant subgroups and how deviance does not always mean breaking the law, but doing things that do not line up with the social norms of a given place. A paper I remember writing in this class was on the opioid epidemic, we analyzed the book “Dope sick” by Beth Macy that took a deep dive in the beginnings of the Opioid Epidemic and how it came to be.
Course 3: ENGL-372- American Masculinities: In this course we learned the different forms of Masculinity and what it can look like in society. We also learned how masculinity is a social construct that we people have created. We learned that masculinity can create inequality socially especially if someone doesn’t fit the “mold” or social norm that is expected of them. In this class I had to analyze a movie and how masculinity is represented in it. I looked at “Saving Private Ryan” as a movie that showed multiple masculinities. We examined the term “toxic masculinity” and the negative impacts it brings in society as well.
