1. Ask a trusted colleague or friend to watch you for an extended period of time (at least a week) to compare what you teach/value with how you conduct yourself. Ask him or her to record any inconsistencies. If you cannot have someone “watch” you, ask someone who knows you the best to give you honest feedback.
Friend (name) | What you teach/value | Example of Consistancey/Inconsistency |
Jack | confidence | Delivered what would be a go ahead hit in the 7th inning if it weren’t for a baserunning mistake that cost our runner to get thrown out at the plate. I was confident and delivered in a pressure situation. |
Sticking to a process | We did our pre game routines together as we do every day. Consistent.
Positive self talk | I uttered the words, “I feel like I got no chance against this guy.” Jack called me out for it. Basically creating my own destiny and failure with that sort of talk.
Aggressive at bats. Attack early in the count. | Jack recognized that this weekend I took fastballs early in the count (something I never do), which set me up to get behind in counts, and have to be defensive in my at bats. He noted that I was telling Hayden (who bats lead off, I hit second) to be aggressive early and not let him throw the fastball by you, only to go up there in my at bat, and take a first pitch fastball. He noted that I need to stick to my aggressive approach. |
Ch 14 Application and Action “Law of Buy-In”
As a leader, you don’t earn any points for failing in a noble cause. You don’t get credit for being “right.” Your success is measured by your ability to actually take the people where they need to go. But you can do that only if the people first buy into you as a leader.
Think about some problem, project, or goal that you have a vision for. Then think about who could help you to realize that vision. During the coming weeks, intentionally build relationships with those people (that person), and do what you can to help them be successful. Only after you have invested in them should you share your vision. Once you have, note how they respond.
Vision: The Lancers hitters will not be outworked by anyone. _____________________
Person who can help me realize my vision:__Assistant Coach________________
List ways you will intentionally build a relationship with this person: __In many ways our relationship is already established, but this year given my success and new role on the team, he’s given my point of view and opinion more validity when it comes to speaking on behalf of the team. _________________________________________________________________
Ways I can add value to him or her:
1. –Share my experiences from a players perspective to help him help us.————————
2. Lead by example and execute HIS vision, so that I can have the trust and freedom to have my thoughts listened to and potentially utilized.————————-
3. Be an extension of his vision for our team. The coach player relationship is a give and take. I have to embody his vision for the team and spread it player to player, before I can start offering feedback and having my vision recognized. —————————How this person responded to my vision: We had issues with accountability in terms of guys taking care of their equipment assignments, field duties etc. We had a long conversation about how we need to take care of little things like this in order to even think about winning games and playing as a team. This was his vision, and my response was that we need to stop our other assistant coach from bailing guys out and picking up the slack when jobs go undone. I asked that he tells our assistant coach to stand down, and see if simply by a few guys leading by example, if everyone will take care of their job. Sure enough, they did. I embodied his vision and communicated with a few freshman about how their roll for us right now can be to help create a culture of taking care of the little things, “house keeping,” so to speak. They responded well and soon enough we were setting up practice on time, and breaking it down in a timely fashion.
