Reflection

Throughout taking the course sociology 351 this semester, I have broadened my knowledge on family violence and the many forms, theories and research methods regarding abuse. We touched heavily on family abuse, child abuse, wife abuse, husband abuse, neglect and relationship violence. For my family life education project, I wanted to include a type of violence that wasn’t already talked about. I chose elderly economic abuse as my family life education project topic because personally, I believe elderly economic abuse, or just elder abuse in general, is a topic that does not get much attention. Additionally, I also personally didn’t know much or anything at all really about elder abuse. Through all my research and putting my final product together, I learned quite a lot about elder economic abuse. Elder economic abuse is actually more common than I thought, but still doesn’t get much attention. Creating this project on elder abuse has made me more educated on the subject and more motivated to help prevent it. My biggest goal I had for my family life education project was to establish prevention methods to help reduce elder economic abuse, and to also make this form of abuse more advocated and known. While taking sociology 351, I leaned about 3 prevention types; primary, secondary and tertiary. In my project, I found primary and secondary interventions for elder abuse. I included primary intervention, such as community based methods, like having strong social support groups and getting people educated on elder abuse to prevent it from happening in the first place. I also had secondary intervention, which were more professional. Such intervention methods included professional methods, such as having law enforcement, attorneys, and social workers. Overall, I am pleased with how my final product, which is a podcast, turned out. Truthfully, my podcast was the first podcast I have ever created, which made my family life education project more interesting to create and I can say I am now a big podcast fan. The only weakness I would try and fix is to try and make my partner and I’s conversation flow more conversationally. I will admit, I was nervous, but also could have have had a better flow. For this project, I worked in a team with my fellow classmate Bailey Giroux. Personally I think Bailey and I did a really great job at being partners and making the workload 50/50. For the proposal, we both split it up and I completed the first portion on the introduction, abuse types and elder economic abuse sections. Bailey then completed the second portion on statistics and targeted audiences. We also both had the same workload for the podcast, making sure one partner was not contributing more than the other. Bailey and I were a great pair and we worked together without any issues, collaborating and bouncing ideas off of each other. Overall, this project was fun to create and I also gained more skills with podcasts, which can definitely come in handy with future projects or even in the workforce.
