Since my class only consists of the subjects, math, science, and Virginia studies, we incorporate English through vocabulary. For every science lesson, we incorporate science vocabulary slides to introduce the lessons, and most important words, and to integrate cross-curricular subjects. We believe introducing vocabulary is important because it allows students to, not only see the words visually but to get a deeper understanding of the slides. The introducing vocabulary slides begin with the word written at the top, and as you play through the slide, each letter is shown. This allows students to say the word entirely, and then spell out the word, finishing by saying the word again. On the next slide of the vocabulary, we determine how many syllables or morphemes the word has. For example, in our slides for science, we have the word rotation, and we, as a class, will clap out the syllables, and or morphemes of the word rotation in which we will find out that there are three total syllables. When looking at the next slide, students will get the opportunity to participate in saying our definition, and including if the word is either a noun, verb, or adjective. Moving onto the next slide, another student will get the opportunity to say another definition in which the slide includes pictures to the whole discussion regarding our word. Moving onto the next slide, students will have the opportunity as a class to play a quick game of thumbs up or thumbs down. This allows students to be given a variety of sentences in which they must figure out if the word is correctly used in which incorporates the English subject. For example “ the rotation of the Earth around the axis.” Students will have to identify if the word rotation is correctly used in the sentence by displaying, either a thumbs up or thumbs down. Moving onto the next slide, students will get the opportunity to hear my sentence in which I say the earth completes a rotation once a day. From then, students will get the opportunity to at their tables to discuss and come up with one sentence that uses the specific word we are focusing on. Usually, for each vocabulary side, students are given two different words which will be included in their reading from their science textbook.
English Intergration
Another way we incorporate English into math is through word problems. Students are given various worksheets which have a variety of problems, including word problems for them to get in the habit of reading through a word problem to find out an answer. This can mostly be seen in a student’s daily math review. We utilize these different methods of integration to encourage students to read through thoroughly, acknowledge specific wording, help them find a solution, and use different English techniques, such as highlighting, and or underlining to show where they got their understanding from.
