As stated before in 2.a for science, we incorporate English by implementing vocabulary and slides into our science lesson. Another way we can incorporate English is through the use of the science textbook. While we go through the science textbook, we are required to implement choral reading. Choral Reading is crucial to include within my teaching methods because it increases student fluency, letter/word recognition, language devices, self-confidence, and drive. Students who might typically feel self-conscious or anxious about reading aloud have built-in support because they are reading aloud together. We as a class will choral read various paragraphs and then point out various text features that they may have learned in English before coming to class to not only boost their understanding of science but English as well. Also, we have study guide materials whether that is a packet or ask us trade cards to help students quiz each other in a fun way, or use highlighting skills to point out the most important information while studying for their test. For the Ask, Ask, Trade cards, students get the chance to move throughout the classroom and quiz one another until they can answer all the study questions correctly and confidently.
Aside from English, I use another way to influence children’s minds which is through the use of videos, ranging from brain pop to rap songs, active movement, and even dancing. As I begin student teaching, I observe my students and the very things they like to do besides learning, and in which they are very interested. I wanted to use technology alongside the arts which they are good at to be more relatable within my lessons and make them fun rather than strictly lecturing.
