About Me

I am a class of 2019 Longwood University Communication Sciences and Disorders Major with a Minor in Special Education. My Bachelor of Science degree from Longwood University has prepared me with everything I need to transition into a Master’s Degree program in Speech-Language Pathology, which I will obtain through Radford University, class of 2021.

I have been interested in the heath sciences field from a young age, but a particularly heartwarming experience with a child who has Down syndrome that I had at age seventeen solidified my desire to pursue a career in Speech Pathology. As I advance in my coursework, my passion for the field continues to grow. I know I am destined to work with children, and I completed an undergraduate clinical observation through the feeding clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond. I look forward to the many clinical experiences and research opportunities I will have as I continue my education as a graduate student.

Why I Am Creating this Portfolio

I am creating this portfolio to showcase the major assignments I have completed throughout my Professional Writing course at Longwood University. The main purpose of this class was to strengthen the professional writing skills of the students from a rhetorical perspective. All of the major assignments we completed are applicable to situations we will face in the working world as we move on from college. Showcased in this portfolio, I have samples of business correspondence, an advertisement brochure, a press release, and a formal report. As a graduate student, I will be required to create many professional documents such as these as a part of my coursework. I found the correspondence to be especially helpful, as I have already constructed several professional letters after learning about them in this course.

The course outcomes -listed below – have been applicable to all of our formal projects in various ways. I have improved heavily upon these course outcomes after completing these projects and the preparation for them. I have always enjoyed writing, but I hadn’t taken into consideration many of the rules and goals for professional, rhetorical writing until taking this class. I learned the importance of being succinct, clear, and direct in my writing, and will continue to build upon this as I practice these skills in the future.
