Healthy Innovations Student Volunteer – Farmville, Virginia (Fall 2019 – Winter 2019)
During my first year at Longwood University in the Therapeutic Recreation program, I volunteered/gained experience by working with children with disabilities. I used a variety of activities to focus on certain goals like improving social conversation, or physical skills by playing fun games like Uno, Hangman, and Football. Post-session, the volunteers would come together and talk about the progress of the level of participation with our students. During my time within the program, I have learned how to interact with different clients. I also learned how to utilize different activities in a fun and safe environment which has caught my attention in the population and setting I could see myself working with in the future.
