Out of all of the ways in which the Honors College allows students to get involved, community service is the most intriguing and eye opening for me. During my first semester, I traveled to places that make up the beautiful town of Farmville, including Wilck’s Lake and the F.A.C.E.S. Food Bank. Visiting and volunteering in these areas gave me a fresh perspective and allowed me to see and help to improve the issues that the greater Farmville and Prince Edward County have to face everyday. More than anything, my service to the community opened my eyes to the fact that it is not just the community on Longwood’s campus that needs assistance, but the community outside of Longwood as well. With all of this being said, my involvement in the Honors College thus far has meant a new level of growth and well roundedness that I never could have imagined having when I arrived at Longwood in August of 2015.
Additionally, I volunteered with New Life Church in Farmville for their 2016 Fall Fest. It was so amazing to see the whole town come out and enjoy Halloween, especially the young children. It gave me a greater appreciation for volunteering and reminded me of the value of stepping outside of the Longwood community to make a day brighter for the entire Farmville community.
