Common Good Project

Reflection:

The common good project fulfilled all of the course outcomes “engage in the process of citizen leadership by investigating multiple perspectives on important public issues,” “understand the nature of public discourse/debate as determined by purpose, audience, and context,” “choose appropriate formats in writing for a variety of purposes,” “analyze the effectiveness of their own texts and processes for specific rhetorical situations,” and “understand how the knowledge, skills, and values learned in general education are interwoven and interrelated, and how they can contribute to the process of citizen leadership.” The topic my group chose for our common good project was to bring awareness to domestic violence against young couples and individuals. I was able to design all of the content for my group’s website. I was able to use weebly to design the website, pixabay for free images, and design a logo to appeal to the audience. When designing the website, I had to use colors, fonts, and different size of texts, so that it could be easily accessible for the audience. I was able to use pictures and a video to appeal to pathos throughout the website. I was able to add warning signs for abuse, hotlines numbers, and different shelters around Central Virginia, so that individuals who needed help knew where they could go. There are several other rhetorical devices used through the website, such as ethos, logos, Kairos, medium, goals, style, decorum, tactical flaw, and epiphany. As a group, we were able to give each other suggestions on what we should add or change on the website, brochure, and rationale. If I could do this project again, I would. I really enjoyed designing the website and working as a team with my group members. The common good project taught me how I can use rhetorical devices to appeal to an audience, how to design a professional website, and how to utilize my group members when needed.
