Honors Pharmacology

Surprisingly, I loved this class! My professor, Dr. Minor, taught my classmates and I hundreds of drugs and their properties in a short amount of time! Although it took me awhile to get a hang of this intense learning style of memorization, I ended the semester great. Dr. Minor has a great way of teaching that allows us to take on a plethora of information. This class was an enhancement course and my final project to receive honors credit was to present on a topic meaningful to me related to nursing. I choose to speak to the class on postpartum depression and how we as nurses can do better. Attached is my paper!

Aging and the Life Course

This Honors class taught me about how aging occurs socially, economically, and politically. Because I am a nursing major, we study aging in the concept of science and health. This class was interesting because we learned about the other side of aging. One of the main projects in this class was to interview someone over the age of 65 on a variety of topics. I learned so much about my grandmother that I did not know before! I learned about her social life, parenting styles, and how losing her spouse effected her. The attachment below is the transcription I gathered from this interview.

Honors Papermaking

This course was my first and only art class that will be taken during my time at Longwood. Because I enjoyed art in high school and was a part of AP art and art club, I decided an honors art class would be an enjoyable course. I could not have been more right! This class taught me what it means to step outside the box and to expand my abilities into a medium I was unfamiliar with. This class brought me out of my shell and let myself express personal experiences through art. Attached is my final project and my artist statement. This project was emotionally difficult yet brought me closer to understanding my grief.

Honors Appreciation of Music

Honors Appreciation of Music is the only music class I will take during my time at Longwood. I was previously involved in music when I was in middle school and was extremely passionate about music and the flute. This class required me to spend time listening to a wide variety of music by musicians I had never heard of. Each song and artist made a tremendous impact on the world and it was interesting learning about their experience with music. At the end of the semester, our professor took us on a field trip to the Opera in Richmond! I was so excited to get dressed up and watch a show that was so widely appreciated. Attached is an assignment I completed while in the class.

LSEM 100

LSEM Honors Nursing, taught by professor Znosko, was a course that opened up my eyes to opportunities in and out of college. The profession of Nursing was defined and explored throughout this course. As a college freshman, I needed guidance on varying classes, expectations, and college lifestyle. LSEM helped me transition from high school to college with ease. Professor Znosko provided us with guest speakers and fellow nursing students to advise us on smart decision making throughout our years at Longwood. LSEM also encouraged us to engage in community service and to get involved in campus.

This artifact is a photo of myself enjoying the solar eclipse with LSEM peers on Wheeler Lawn! It felt like the entire honors community was experiencing that moment together. Photo taken August 21, 2017.

American Literature

American Literature, taught by Dr. VaNess, was a beneficial course due to its honors credit and knowledgable professor. Dr. VaNess motivated me to challenge myself creatively in writing and research. I learned how to correctly research for a topic through the Longwood Greenwood Library and learned the importance of taking advantage of office hours.

My artifact from Dr. VaNess’s course illustrates my overall growth from mediocre writing to my personal best. I finalized this article after countless hours of researching and visiting office hours. I studied in depth the life of Anne Sexton and how society influenced her work.
