During the summer of 2020 I interned at a non-profit in my area, Total Action for Progress (TAP). I worked in their Communications department and I really enjoyed my time there. During my time at TAP, I was involved in many different projects, some being but not limited to, media monitoring, social media content creation and video editing. This internship was really beneficial to me because I was able to do different tasks and try new things all while gaining more professionalism.
Since I did this internship during the summer of 2020, I had to approach it a bit differently. The COVID-19 pandemic was happening and many people were working from home, including myself. I was originally supposed to go to their office everyday, but when it was time for me to start working, I was told I would work remotely like many other people. I was not surprised by this decision but it was something I had to get used to. Ironically, I do not like working from home at all. Many people find it more comforting but I look at my home as a place of rest and maybe some entertaining, not a place for work. So, sometimes I have a hard time working from home and getting things done. However, during this internship I developed a routine in which I was still productive from my house. While I would have preferred to go to their office, I came up with an at home work schedule that worked for me.
All in all, I very much enjoyed this internship. Once I got used to working from home and reporting to my boss, I really liked it. Also, one of my responsibilities was writing press releases/alerts from time to time. I have included one below about one of TAP’s resources.
I am glad and thankful that I completed this internship because I learned a lot in just a few short months. I learned about professionalism, what it is like working for a non-profit and the kinds of assignments I can do with my knowledge of Communication Studies.
