My time as the Communication Studies intern at Longwood University, was definitely a memorable and beneficial experience. Being an intern for the whole academic year was a brand new experience for me. Any internship I had done previously was only for a few months, so I really became more invested in this one.
I was involved in many different projects during my time in this internship. I was in charge of content creation for the Communication Studies social media accounts, I wrote blog posts about events, students and professors and I helped plan events within the department. So, I was definitely not bored during this internship. There was always something I could be working on.
I mentioned how I was very invested in this internship because it was the longest one I had ever done. I also became more invested because I approached it as a job and I wanted to do my best. Every week I met with my advisor and we would discuss my assignments and upcoming projects. I spent a lot of time planning, creating and editing my work because I wanted to provide the best information to my audience; the audience being Longwood students and alumni.
TheĀ link above is to a video I helped direct for the department. “The Real COMM Competition” has become a tradition within the department where students from each concentration (Digital Media and Public Relations) compete against each other in hopes of winning the competition. As the Communication Studies intern, I was in charge of the whole competition and I had to plan it then help facilitate it. One of the main activities was a scavenger hunt so I framed the competition with a pirate theme. I asked all of the Communication Studies professors to dress up as pirates and I was there for most of the filming to help them say information about the competition. I had never planned an event before so this was all new experiences to me. While it was challenging, I am really thankful I was given the opportunity to learn new skills.
Overall, my time as the Communication Studies intern was a great experience I will never forget. I was challenged in various ways, but I learned more about professionalism, time management, event planning, social media content creation and more. I am so glad I was chosen to experience this opportunity and learn all that I did.
