There are many aspects of Communication Studies that I appreciate. One of them being their professional development courses. Throughout my time as a Communication Studies major, I have completed three professional development courses. One during my freshman year, another in my junior year and the last in my senior year. The Communication Studies department at Longwood University sees the value in preparing students for life after graduation, which I really appreciate.
During this course, we continued our efforts made in COMM 305- Building your Professional Brand. We continued to learn more about LinkedIn, the benefits of networking and learning how to format a resume and cover letter. We were also shown tips for interviewing, applying for jobs or graduate schools and so on.
I found this course really helpful because I was able to come up with a plan for myself after graduation. I knew I wanted to enter the working world, but I had no idea where to start. I was feeling pretty overwhelmed by it all before starting this course. However, this course allowed me to have discussions about applying for jobs, when to apply and tactics to use. As I am writing this, I am continuing my job search and use the knowledge from this course all of the time.
Team field report
In the document above, I worked with three other classmates to interview professionals in the career world. We all had to individually interview professionals and then compile our findings in this document. This is just one way in which networking was emphasized in this course. This project allowed us to learn about working professionals as we figure out our own careers. This course was very helpful in guiding us down a path towards post graduation success.
