This course was required for my major, Communication Studies. I can see why this course was required for all Communication Studies students in both concentrations. This course discussed several ethic principles and how they apply to Communication Studies and the world in general. Having this knowledge is useful to anyone regardless of their field. Being able to understand ethic principles and apply them to your life is important and can aid in decision making.
In this course, we discussed Kant, Utilitarianism, the Golden Mean, the Trolly Problem, among others. I am glad I took this course because I remember much of what we learned and apply the principles in my daily life.
I am glad I took this course for several reasons, some of them being, in public relations it is important to remember to be ethical, in my daily life I strive to be ethical and when working in any position it is important to know which ethical principles are important to you so you can find a place of employment with similar values. From the knowledge I gained from this course, I believe I am more prepared to be ethical in a work setting as well as in my personal interactions with others.
The document above is a professional ethics statement I wrote for this course. For this assignment, I was tasked with writing my personal ethics and how I would use them in a work setting. I think it is important to know where you stand regarding ethics and this assignment made me think intently about my own. My professor also mentioned that some Communication Studies Alumni have used this document when applying for jobs. It is probably something that employers don’t see very often, so I will most likely include this document with any resume and cover letter I write.
