This course was required for my major and even though it was only one credit, I think it was one of the most useful classes I have ever taken. In the Communication Studies Department, professors emphasize how their course material could be used in a job setting after graduation. This course was all about figuring out your professional brand, networking and overall becoming more prepared to graduate.
This course only met as a class once a week, but I had to do various assignment weekly. As a class, we spent weeks improving our LinkedIn accounts, adding people relevant to our fields of interest and finding groups to join. I learned how I was using LinkedIn wasn’t the most effective way and I added many components to my profile. This course was very useful because much of what we did as assignments, benefitted our professionalism. I think this course should be required for all majors because a lot of what we learned was general networking advice that anyone could benefit from.
The document above is my master resume. When I would make resumes before taking this course, they would be a basic overview of my skills and not tailored to the position I was applying for. One of my biggest takeaways from this course was to have a master resume to help create tailored resumes. Sometimes it is hard to think of all of the relevant experience you have for a job. Having a master resume takes out that stress because it holds all of your experiences that you can choose from to help write a tailored resume. Another tip I learned was to make tailored resumes for the jobs you’re applying for. This lets the hiring manger know that you did your research about their company and only included the most relevant information to them.
Overall, this course provided me with great tips for preparing to graduate. I learned so much about resumes, networking, utilizing LinkedIn and more. I also think I gained more professionalism from taking this course because it really made me think about how I would want to be represented in a professional way.
