As a Communication Studies major, I do not take that many English classes. In fact, I have only taken them to help fulfill my Cormier Honors College and general education requirements. However, I enjoyed this English course because it was not a traditional one. This English course was focused on digital writing, meaning, it involved examining print articles and transforming them into digital pieces or creating digital pieces of our own.
Since I have taken various courses for my major, I was already familiar with many of the topics discussed in this course. However, it was also challenging because I read articles that I was unfamiliar with and had to analyze them and relate them to the course material. Overall, I liked this course because I was able to use the knowledge I already had and build upon it. Also, the professor was a fun and interesting person, which added to my enjoyment of the course.
The infographic above was an assignment for this course. I was asked to do some type of research and then translate my findings into an appealing infographic. I chose to make a digital survey and I asked Cormier Honors College students to fill it out. I then looked at the percentages from the results and created this infographic. Research has never been my strong suite, but I still enjoyed this project because I was able to represent the thoughts of my honors college peers.
When I told my professor about my idea, she encouraged me to do it even though some of my classmates were doing more formal research. The flexibility that comes with honors classes is one of my favorite parts about being in the Cormier Honors College. Honors students are able to interpret projects differently and professors still understand and appreciate them. Conducting research about this topic was very important to me and I wanted to represent honors students. I am glad I took this course because it reminded me that tasks can be done differently and that doesn’t make them wrong, it is just a different approach.
