Introduction

My name is Devon Tinius, and I am a senior at Longwood University. I am graduating this May, 2019, with a major in Liberal Studies and a minor in Children’s Literature. My goal is to start working as an elementary school teacher in a private school in Northern, VA.

I have had many experiences volunteering with children of different ages, and I have also worked in multiple jobs that involve leadership positions with children. This summer I had the opportunity to work as a camp counselor at a local church camp. I was the leader of first grade campers, and it was one of the best work experiences that I’ve had. I have also worked at a local daycare near my school, Sunrise Learning Center, where I was the assistant teacher to 2, 3, and 4 year old children. My job was to support the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development of the children within the classroom, as well as encourage creativity and imagination. In addition, I’ve taught Zumba fitness to children and teenagers, ages ranging from 3-18 for a number of years. Lastly, I have volunteered at an after school club called Beyond the Numbers, where I assisted lower-income children with their homework and focused on being a positive role model in their lives.

This e-Portfolio is the final assignment for ENGL 470, Professional Writing. This course was not needed for my major but I took it to improve my professional writing skills. This class focuses on a variety of writing styles, such as press releases, brochures, resumes, and letters. This course has helped me practice professional writing more effectively and has taught me the necessary skills that I need when formatting specific writing pieces. I have successfully learned these course outcomes, and will continue using these in my future writing:

  1. Analyze and produce writing genres commonly found in the professional world (e.g., business, gov., media);
  2. Create professional documents that use plain English (clear, concise, and grammatically correct);
  3. Conduct research to create content for a variety of professional documents (memos, letters, reports, etc.);
  4. Create professional documents that uses design—standard formats, layout, use of graphics, etc.
  5. Practice oral communication skills to present content effectively (enhanced with multimedia tools);
  6. Participate productively in collaborative projects.
