Conclusion

This portfolio contains several works written from my professional writing course at Longwood University. Specifically there are examples of a Bad News Letter, Persuasive Letter, Brochure, Press Release, and Formal report. While much more was completed throughout this class, these were the more notable assignments that demonstrated many if not all of the learning goals addressed in the introduction. The learning goals I have achieved will help me significantly in my future career. I will be able to apply much of the knowledge I have learned in my class to other course work and to working in the medical setting.

There are many tools and skills I will be able to transfer to other parts of life. One skill that I have improved on tremendously in this class is speaking effectively. This skill will transfer to graduate school when I have to give several oral presentation and exams. I have learned that in order to speak effectively you must practice and speak with purpose, especially when giving a presentation. Another skill I have grown greatly in is being able extract important information. When writing documents in professional writing, it was necessary to determine what information was critical to the document. In the medical field if you are missing vital information when turning in paperwork, it can look like you don’t know what you are doing. Being able to determine pertinent information is a key skill. Finally, I was able to grow more as a leader from this class as I delegated tasks to my team members for group projects. A speech pathologist must know how to work in a team as they work with several people such as occupational therapist, physical therapists, social workers, nurses, and doctors. Being able to prioritize and delegate tasks in the future will save me much time and energy in upcoming years. Overall, I have learned a great deal from my professional writing class and plan to continue using the knowledge I have gained.
