I have taken various classes throughout my college career that has allowed me to gain skills and knowledge that I can use within the disaster management field. These classes have helped prepare me for the disaster management field and the skills I have learned are beneficial to disaster management companies.
Communication Research
This class taught me how to effectively conduct a research study to further knowledge about a topic of interest. I learned the various aspects of a research study while writing a 26 page research paper about the study I conducted. I can use these skills to conduct research studies regarding disaster management procedures to determine their effectiveness. This can open room for improvement to the procedures which can potentially save lives.
Digital Editing & Media Production
These classes taught me various fundamentals regarding digital editing software and equipment. I learned beginning and intermediate techniques that have allowed me to shoot and edit video to create a high quality product that relays a desired message to a general audience. I learned how to shoot and edit video to create a finished product about a general topic. I can use these skills to shoot and edit video for disaster management companies regarding a variety of topics.
Digital and Social Media Technologies
This class taught me how to effectively manage and brand a blog on various social media websites. I learned how to relay an effective marketing campaign on social media websites that include the distribution of messages that pertain to the audience of each platform. I can use these skills to market disaster management products and procedures to the general public on social media. I can also relay information to specific audiences on social media regarding an incoming disaster.
Introduction to Media Writing & Advanced Media Writing
These classes taught me the skills and guidelines for writing articles used in various media elements to inform a general audience. I have learned general AP guidelines while completing projects regarding a variety of topics used to inform the public about a community issue. I can use these skills to write and relay information about disaster management and incoming disasters to the general public for increased awareness.
Public Speaking
My class in public speaking taught me how to effectively speak in front of a general audience in order to relay a persuasive message. I learned how to deliver an effective speech consisting of various points in a clear and persuasive manner. I can use these skills to deliver speeches regarding an incoming disaster to the public to enhance preparedness. I can also use these skills to inform audiences about disaster preparedness techniques so they may be better prepared for a disaster.
