Geography 201 was not what I was expecting for a geography class. The class curriculum was not so much about physical locations of countries and cities but it focused more on history. There was also a big emphasis on earth sciences aspects such as plate tectonics. The official course description of Geography 201 is the addressing of the significance of human/environment interaction and cultural processes in the organization of space on the earth’s surface from a geographical point. The course objectives were to foster an understanding of the role of geography in everyday life and to help students understand the workings of major earth, environmental, cultural, and economic systems from a geographic point of view. As the course objectives described, there was a bug emphasis on the cultural aspect of geography. I learned how certain cultures have developed specific traditions, values, and beliefs based on where their culture originated from. This aspect of the class could be beneficial to my nursing career because i will have to be aware of the cultural differences and implement culturally competent care to my patients.
Throughout Geography 201 the curriculum jumped all over the place but we focused on one area in Washington State called the Palouse every chapter. The Palouse is a very unique place which has many characteristics that we learned about. Additionally, at the beginning of the semester every student was assigned a country to do country updates on pertaining to what we learned and at the end of the semester we did a 10 page paper about our country. My country I was assigned was Greece and my artifact is my Greece Country Profile Paper.
