I Think I Can Read and Write

I sat there staring hard at each choice. The first choice I would ever have to make on my own. It was simply the start of my independence. At station A was a pile of shaving cream. At station B, a fresh box of crayons and finally at station C blocks. This simple decision affected my life more than I imagined. That one decision shaped how I would read and write for the rest of my life.

This paragraph I expressed about the experience of my first time learning to write. The Literacy Narrative was a chance for me to give the author a chance to see how I am as a writer.

Technology has influenced the way this generation has developed drastically. The major effect is texting. I now have to think about how to spell common words such as “though” because I am so use to typing “tho.” I even catch myself saying LOL. I will actually say LOL. I will even start making up my own words. Instead of playing with a phone while doing schoolwork, put the phone away. Focus on the task at hand. The cell phone will always be there, however the assignment has a due date. The work will be more efficient if the focus is on the work rather than the latest twitter trend.

Technology has played an important role in the lives of this generation. Students grew up with technology such as computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices. In some ways technology has had a positive affect on learning. However, it has added challenges to learning. As an aspiring teacher it will be a challenge to keep students motivated to continue to use proper grammar and not text talk.

I grew up in a generation where the elders look at me different. They do not know me, yet they judge me. They judge me because of the generation I grew up in. I was raised learning slang. They assume that my generation has it easier and does not care as much. We still have to learn and do even more to prove them wrong. Slang is used in everyday conversation. It has become a habit to speak with slang. I do not up on the slang that I speak, so when I write I use many slang words and phrases.

Slang has hurt the english language. People will speak differently in different environments. Students will speak one way with their friends and speak completely another way with respected adults. Most adults are aware of how students speak to each other. Often slang rolls onto student work. By habit students speak with slang. It becomes normal to continue to write using slang.

I am not at the level of literacy that I should be. I should have stepped up my dedication to my work, so I would not struggle in the end. I had to even look up how to spell literate in the dictionary. I grew up in the generation where Urban Dictionary was more commonly used than Webster. I relied on my teachers to do my work than to take the time and do it myself.

This paragraph was a tough paragraph to admit too. I could have done better in high school to prepare myself  for the next step, college. I am a literate person. I am not at the level of literacy I should be. I should be able to write at a more academic level and a more developed vocabulary.
