I chose to minor in Children’s Literature when I was still planning on becoming a teacher. These courses have helped me to develop the critical analysis skills required to delve into children’s and young adult literature. Before taking these classes, I only read children’s and young adult books for fun and never bothered to analyze them the way one would analyze a more conventional field of literature. After taking them, I have gained an understanding into the merit of children’s literature studies as a field. Intro to literary analysis provided the skills to begin to analyze standard literature and these analysis skills are applied in the rest of the classes that specifically work with children’s and young adult literature.
