Data Analysis – Local Precipitation

Written by Kathryn Moran. Comments Off on Data Analysis – Local Precipitation Posted in: Uncategorized

This data set is the monthly average of rain from 2010 in Vienna, VA.

This second set is from the monthly average at Washington Dulles International Airport also in Virginia.  Part of my interest in this data set is that I live right near both of these places.  While Vienna and Dulles Airport are only 13 miles apart, there are some slight differences in the average monthly precipitation.  However, they are both relatively similar in their monthly averages which makes sense considering their proximity.  These charts do not account for snowfall in these areas.

This third chart just has the two areas monthly averages for a side by side comparison.  Both of these areas experienced their highest monthly average of 2010 in May.  This side-by-side scatterplot makes it easier to visually compare the two sets of data.  All data was found here.

Technology in the Classroom

Written by Kathryn Moran. Comments Off on Technology in the Classroom Posted in: Uncategorized

As technology in the world has advanced, so has the use of it in the classroom. There have been many advances in classroom technology to help enhance student learning and make it more engaging for students. Because of the broad scope that technology offers, the cost is also varying—richer school districts will have newer and better technology but even just having something as simple as a book on tape for students can be effective. While there are some slight disadvantages to using technology, it is becoming a more prominent feature in classrooms across the country. Classroom chalkboards are being replaced with SMART Boards, physical textbooks are being traded in for digital, paperless versions, and the assistive technology for students with special needs has grown significantly. Programs like TippyTalk is an assistive app that allows people with a verbal disability to communicate using pictures that can be sent as messages. Technology has also allowed for multiple types of learning to be met and even explored by other students. Using technology is a beneficial and effective resource in a classroom to further a student’s overall learning. This attached graphic shows multiple ways that technology is being integrated into the modern classroom and which resources are being used.
