Conflicts in Virginia’s Places and Past

“Conflicts in Virginia History,” as this section of GNED-400 was titled, was a change up for me. The class was a combination of history and literature where Drs. Fergeson and Miller utilized historical texts, like novels, newspapers, and other sources, to give context and better understanding of the history and culture of Virginia.

As a history major, I am used to the historical discussion part required by the course, in conjunction with primary works and understanding the context, but the literature-twist gave me a new understanding. I learned basic Virginia history growing up in Virginia public schools, but this class presented a new understanding and explanation of not only these events, but also went greatly in-depth on the interpretations of these times and places both in recent years and in the past.

Interpretation of events and things through discussion and writing is not something that history students are often taught in class, but a skill that some pick up along the way, and I believe that this course greatly aided me in acquiring this, which I hope to utilize in my later career.
