Hello! My Name is Madison Koontz and I am a rising sophomore at Longwood University. I am a nursing major with a Spanish minor in the Cormier Honors College.
In the future I plan to be a travel nurse, preferably on an international level. I am also interested in possibly working as a nurse on the US- Mexico border with agencies to offer health care access to underrepresented populations. I am passionate about social issues so transcultural nursing and women’s health are of great interest to me.
In my free time I love to exercise! My favorite active activities are hiking and yoga. I also love to hangout with friends and play the guitar. I just started learning the guitar this winter so I am quite bad at it, but it is so fun!
In the Cormier Honors College at Longwood, there are three pillars that are stressed: scholarship, service, and community. These foundational aspects of the program set positive intentions for students and offer opportunities for growth and support in each of these areas.
The scholarship pillar encompasses the academic nature of the honors program where abstract learning is promoted. The honors college stresses that “It’s not more work, it’s different work.” To learn more about my personal connection to this pillar, click here.
Service is another component that is stressed in the honors college. To promote growth in the outside community and within the honors community, honors students engage in volunteer work individually and during service retreats with the honors college. To learn more about my service, click here.
Finally, the last pillar of the honors college is community. This aspect focuses on creating a positive community for students to thrive within the honors community. This sense of community is established through things like honors work spaces, Wheeler hall, retreats, events, and clubs. To learn more about my experience with the honors community, click here.
