Former Navy SEAL comes out as transgender: ‘I want some happiness’

Transgender civil rights are gainer wider national attention.  Here’s a great example of how Kristin Beck, former Navy Seal, came out as transgender after retiring from the military.  She talks about how she had to hide the “real me” for 20 years in the military because people who are transgender are banned from the armed services.

  1. I remember hearing about this story over the summer on the Today Show. I thought it was interesting that Kristin said she joined the Navy SEALs to “cure” herself and then at the end of the interview with Anderson Cooper said that she was “cured” for 20 years. Also, that fact that she said at the time she did not know that she was trying to hypermasculinize herself when she was a man but at the time she did not know that was what she was doing at the time. She tried to push her true self to her core and keep it inside by doing what she thought a manly man would do and it only increased her feelings and made it her purging more difficult each time. It is crazy to think that someone could hide a huge part of themselves for so long and its horrible to think that she is not the only one who tries to “cure” themselves by hypermasculinizing what they do.
