Honors Black Writers

Honors Black Writers was a course that really challenged me in terms of critical thinking and time management. The class had readings due every class period with most readings requiring several chapters to be read for that day of class, which meant I had to schedule time to do the reading to be prepared for class on time. I struggled at times keeping up with the reading schedule, but it was a good way to improve on my time management skills for the class. The professor was willing to meet with students or answer any questions through email about the readings or assignments, which was very nice as I often had questions on the paper assignments for the class.

In this English class there was a lot of work that had to be done outside of the classroom. The other students and I were challenged several times throughout the class with our literary analysis paper and final that centered on critical thinking. Even though these assignments were very hard to complete it was very rewarding in the end with all of my research and thoughts coming to fruition in a well formatted paper.

The artifact I chose for this class is my literary analysis paper that I did on Toni Morrison’s A Mercy and the topic of use of reflection as a symbol and its representation of a shift in characters when brought up. When we read the novel in class, I knew I wanted to write on this topic as it was a continuous symbol brought up multiple times in the book that I found to be very interesting. It was a bit hard to get started on this paper, but my professor was open to answer any questions I had which made the process go smoothly.
