Introduction to Theater was a class I took because I loved to do theatre and it satisfied the requirement for Longwood. Ever since the fifth grade I was involved with theatre to the point in high school where I joined a competitive theatre group for four years. I enjoyed getting to look at the origins of theatre and see how it became what it is today. I was intrigued learning about how the origins of theatre were actually because of storytelling and moral purposes rather than what it is known for today, which is show stopping entertainment.
This class got me more out of my shell and interacting with my fellow peers. Everyday for class we came in and had a discussion on whatever aspect of theatre we were discussing that day and they were usually very fun discussions. The teacher would even allow us to pull up videos about what we were discussing to further draw emphasis on whatever point we were trying to make.
The artifact I chose for this class a project I did with a classmate of mine on scene design. The project was to choose any play we wanted and take a single scene from it to design a set for while keeping in mind the different aspects of design. We chose to do The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe and from that play we chose to do a scene that took place in the White Witch’s throne room. It was fun project that allowed me to make another friend and to be creative. We both had fun meeting up and discussing the project while looking at pictures of different set designs as well as pictures of ice for inspiration. Ultimately, it was a fun project that got me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to challenge myself creatively.
