Goal 10: Foreign Language Competency

Intermediate Integrated Language & Culture in Spanish I was a class that was very challenging as it is very difficult to learn a new language and be able to conjugate in a natural way. I learned very quickly that this class was much more difficult than the beginner class I took in the fall of 2018 as the basics were review fairly quickly and new information was presented within the first few weeks. It challenged my time management skills as well as my level of preparedness for class and exams. I learned that I needed to spend extra time outside of class studying and practicing new concepts in order to effectively use them on homework, classwork, and exams. This year I could not simply look back over the textbook and be ready for exams as I needed to prepare flashcards and use websites for review that my professor approved to be truly prepared for an exam due to the sheer amount of new material.

I was very glad that my professor was so willing to work with the students as it was very helpful to email him questions or approach him after class to ask for tips for ways to review for the exams. The professor also listened to the class and if there was ever a time that we were all lost on how to do a certain grammar concept he was more than willing to take a day and review the material to ensure our success.

The artifact I chose for the class is a news report I did on the fire in the Notre Dame that was done completely in Spanish, which was very challenging and rewarding. It was challenging to write solely in Spanish as conveying the meaning I want can be difficult when formatting a sentence in Spanish. It was very rewarding as my professor told me that he understood my summary of the article and that it was well-done  Even though it was hard and I had trouble at first,  I enjoyed the challenge as I could apply all the concepts my professor had carefully gone over in class and demonstrate my mastery of different concepts.
