Correspondence

Reflection:

The purpose of these assignments was to understand the importance of a well-written letter. This assignment gave us the opportunity to produce writing genres found in the professional world as well as to use clear language and format a professional letter correctly.

In the bad news letter, we were required to take on the role of a city councilor refusing a citizen’s request for a speedier potholes fix on their street. I had not written a letter like this before taking this class. The persuasive letter flipped our role as a writer. Whereas the bad news letter was from a city councilor, the persuasive letter was from a concerned citizen asking that the potholes be placed as a priority. This allowed us to see how professional writing exists outside of just the business world, and how it can be used to bring change to a community. Writing the letters seemed easy, but after receiving feedback, it was obvious that there were areas I could improve on, such as giving more details and offering a solution to the problem.
