Principles of Secondary Education in Mathematics
Dr. Sorrell
Spring 2019
The course Principles of Secondary Education in Mathematics introduced me to the world of teaching, and the many different approaches teachers must take. In this class, Dr. Sorrell discussed that mathematics can be learned and taught in a diverse amount of strategies. As a result, we began learning different avenues we could take when giving lessons. We worked with Cuisenaire rods, observed other classes, and read about purposeful questions that help guide classroom discussion. My main goal for this class was to be able to construct a lesson that would encompass all students.
The artifact chosen from this class was a final submission of my High Quality Lesson plan. Using pictures and Cuisenaire rods I came up with a lesson to engage and teach my student’s how to subtract mixed fractions. At the end of the course, I gave my lesson in front of the class. Although it was targeted for fifth and sixth grade math, practicing giving a lesson and asking and answering questions helped teach me a lot. I learned that when you are the instructor you must use your authority in a positive way that creates a healthy learning environment. In addition, it is your responsibility to assess student’s needs accurately, so that you can help them reach their full potential. This class gave me insight for what to expect as I continue working towards my goal as a teacher, and I hope to continue to improve my lessons, and become a stronger teacher with every Secondary Education course I take.
