The connection between Longwood and the surrounding town of Farmville has provided countless service opportunities, many of which I have had the opportunity to be a participant. Over of the course of freshmen year my favorite service activity that I have had the privilege of participating in has been Buddy Ball. Buddy Ball was an opportunity presented to us by the National Society of Leadership and Success, and is a program created where Longwood students play games with children with disabilities from Farmville. The session that I attended was basketball, and I got paired with my buddy to help him remember the rules and run up and down the court. Watching the children cheer one another on and compete in the basketball game was definitely one of my favorite moments at school, and I will never forget how excited my buddy got when he scored his first (and only) basket. Feeling like I was making a positive impact in the community, and having the opportunity to be involved in something greater than myself was an experience that I will cherish, and hopefully be able to stay involved with this upcoming year.
