To fulfill Goal 3, I took American Literature. This particular class focused on Virginia literature, and consisted on reading and analyzing both books and poems throughout Virginia history, either written by Virginia authors or pertaining to Virginia history. I found this to be particularly interesting; as a New Jersey native, I did not know much about Virginia’s history before this class, and was intrigued to learn about Virginia’s history in the roundabout way of studying literature about Virginia. One topic that I am passionate about that was covered in this class with the reading of “The Romantic Comedians” by Ellen Glasgow is women’s rights and equality for women. Using humor, the novel mocked the standardized gender roles of society, a topic that I had an opportunity to write about in this class.
