Integrating Perspectives: Building the Next Level of the Civitae Core

The Center for Faculty Enrichment (CAFE) and the Civitae Core Curriculum Committee invite you to a two-day workshop focused on developing coursework for Longwood’s new Civitae core curriculum program, with a particular emphasis on integrative learning at the Perspectives level.  By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to articulate what integration means at all levels of the core and understand how to meet the outcomes associated with courses in each category at the Perspectives level.  Faculty will also have the opportunity to learn or to refine backward design and transparent assignment techniques. Although the workshop will touch on many aspects of the core, the main focus will be on Perspectives-level coursework, the majority of which will be developed in 2018-19 and offered during the 2019-20 academic year.

This year’s guest speaker is Dr. Ashley Finley.  Dr. Finley currently serves as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Dominican Experience at Dominican University. She is also national evaluator for the Bringing Theory to Practice (BTtoP) project, a national project dedicated to understanding the intersection of students’ engaged learning, civic development, and well-being. Her recent publications include the edited volume Civic Learning and Teaching and Assessing Underserved Students’ Engagement in High-Impact Practices with co-author Tia McNair, in addition to numerous book chapters and monographs. Prior to joining Dominican, she was senior director of assessment and research at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) and a faculty member in sociology at Dickinson College. Her work at Dominican and with colleges and universities nationally has focused on engaging faculty and staff in developing student-centered, sustainable practices that enable the advancement of student success and learning with an emphasis on equity and evidence-based standards for improvement.

Registration is now open @ . The first 25 people to register will receive a copy of the book, Engaging Ideas: The Professor’s Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom by John Bean. Registration will close on Friday, May 11 @ 5:00pm

The Institute is free for all Longwood faculty and staff.
