I initially did not think that this course would be very impactful in my career at Longwood, but I now see the great value that it offers to Freshmen. I had never been challenged very much by my English classes in high school, so I assumed this course would have the same fate. I was wrong, though.
It was in this class that I came to understand the purpose of writing. While doing research and completing this article, I found that writing is a powerful tool for learning that is under-utilized. Writing is typically not thought of being used in subjects like math and sciences, but writing can actually be a very helpful way to grasp difficult concepts within these subject areas.
Additionally, I learned that the attitude of educators and students toward writing has a big effect on how well students read and write. Before the emergence of social media and new technologies, there was a greater interest in reading and writing. As technology advances, as must learning techniques. Part of the reason that writing skills are on the decline is that students are bored with the methods in which they learn it.
