Quantitative Reasoning

Course: Math 135 Mathematical Modeling of Finances (Fall 2020)

I took this course during the 2020 Fall semester. In previous math courses I took throughout high school, I had difficulties making connections between the material I was learning and real world application. Throughout this course, the material was presented in a way that not only explained how to do the math problems, but their place and purpose in everyday life.

Throughout the course of the semester, we were assigned to projects that focused on real world application. We were given a problem as if a family member had asked for our advice, and had to respond and explain our advice through solving the problem and explaining how we got our answers. As a future educator, I think this approach to mathematics helps students conceptualize and understand the purpose behind what they are learning. Taking the time to write out and explain the steps taken to find the answer to a problem helped me better understand each mathematical concept we learned, and this kind of activity is something I would utilize in my future classroom.
