Longwood Athletic Training Connection: Beginning of the Semester Stuff (BSS)

Greetings, LU AT students and preceptors!

I wanted to take a few minutes to update everyone on Beginning of the Semester Stuff (BSS).

NEW HIRES

Hampen-Sydney College has hired two new athletic trainers. Alison Cameron will cover soccer, basketball and tennis. Kyle Murray will assist Brandon with football and cover lacrosse, swimming and golf.

Longwood has hired two new interns. Konstandena Brown will cover field hockey and lacrosse and she starts today! Andrew Cagle will work with women’s basketball and cheer, and while we know he will be here soon, the date has not yet been set.

CAMPUS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

On a recent walk across campus, I noted five (!!) construction sites between Willett and Lancaster. Campus is somewhat of a scene right now, and likely will remain that way right up until the debate. Be prepared to be inconvenienced ;-))

NEW FACULTY

We are currently conducting a faculty search for the third AT faculty member, the position that is vacant due to Sharon retiring. We will have two adjunct instructors due to this vacancy.

  • Ellen Hudgins, president and co-owner of Progressive Physical Therapy, will be teaching modalities this semester.
  • Catie LeBlanc will be teaching lower extremity evaluation.

Exercise Science has hired two new faculty. Dr. Kyle Levers will be teaching KINS 316 Essentials of Strength and Conditioning, and Mr. Troy Purdom will be teaching KINS 387 Exercise Physiology. I have met them both and I think they are a great addition to our faculty.

It is certainly shaping up to be an exciting academic year!

-Dr. Thompson

Preseason is well underway!

The HSC football students are entering day 3 of preseason. Sadie, Monica, Andrew, Hunter and April are all hard at work.

At Longwood, Jewel, Catie LeBlanc and the women’s soccer team began practice August 2nd, so they are finishing up their second week. Katie Amurrio was originally assigned to WSOC as well, but she has changed her major.IMG_1708

Ian, Sammy and Chie are holding down the fort at field hockey. Ian is taking the lead on caring for the players, since Chie is only covering until the intern arrives.

Over at men’s soccer, Carly is running the three-ring circus of Harley, Chipper and Taylor. They have had to step up while Carly is conducting interviews and are doing a great job.

Carly is interviewing for two full-time AT positions- one for softball and one for baseball. Fingers crossed we will be able to announce the new hires in the very near future, so that LU Athletic Training can once again be fully staffed.

Mr. Ashley gets started with Meghan, Hannah and Tyler on Monday, and the last preseason reports are Katie Cook and Sam, who will report to HSC men’s soccer on Wednesday next week.
