Southside Virginia Student Success Project- Using Qualitative Analysis to Support Academic Success

The Southside Student Success Project sought to identify and interview current and former Longwood students from Southside Virginia who did not meet minimum standards for academic success in their first semester(s) at Longwood, resulting in either academic suspension or academic probation. We used qualitative analysis of the interview responses to support recommendations for new services that will best meet the needs of new students who fit the same profile, support their academic success, and improve retention.

Presenter bios:

Joanna Baker has been at Longwood since January 1988, serving as Assistant Dean of the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences since 1995. She is responsible for a wide range of student and faculty academic support, and serves as College liaison to many other campus offices, groups, and committees. She holds a BS in Sociology and a MS in Counseling, has taught Longwood Seminar for many years, and has taught Psychology at Longwood and at Southside Virginia Community College.

Joey Siverd serves as the graduate assistant for the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences. He is a ’15 alumnus and graduated with a B.S. in Criminology and Sociology. He is currently enrolled in the Counselor Education graduate program and is concentrating in Mental Health Counseling. Joey has experience working with college students in his role with the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences and as a practicum student in the Longwood University Counseling and Psychological Services office. He anticipates completing his graduate program in May 2018 and seeks to begin employment working in community mental health that will lead to licensure as a professional counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
