Rather than the usual English 400 course, I opted for the Honors 400 course entitled Conflicts in Virginia History to complete this goal. This was one of my favorite classes at Longwood, mostly because we got to take field trips! But it also forced me to think in new ways and provided a lot of new and interesting insight into historical events I took for granted. After each trip we wrote reflection papers, and this is one of my favorites as it was the trip to Monument Avenue. As a Richmond native, I drive on Monument Avenue almost every day, so stopping to think about the monuments I pass opened my eyes to the city I’ve lived in for nearly 10 years now.
