HONS 295-50
I took this class for fun, as it will have no affect on my honors course count or any relation to my minor, on the suggestion of an upperclassman in honors my second semester, freshman year. The class, Street to Cell, was taught by Ann Bradshaw, and was an amazing look into my classmates and prisoners minds. There were less than 15 people in the class, and we each chose a topic to spend the entire semester researching. I chose education in the prison system. At the end of the semester we presented our research at the Honors Poster session. Doing the research gave me a lot of insight into issues within the prison system, and some that I feel could be made better with adding education into the daily lives of prisoners.
The coolest part about this class was that we went to Piedmont Prison in Prince Edward once every two weeks to talk to one of the inmates. She was 20 years old, right around the age of many of us. We were allowed to ask her questions, sometimes pertaining to our research but usually just about how she was feeling, but never allowed to bring pencils, paper, etc. I even had to take my nose ring out to enter the prison! This class changed my perception about a lot of things, and I’m really grateful that it was offered to me. I hope that eventually I can continue the research I started in this class and maybe make a difference in the prison system one day.
