Pillar: Scholarship

My first thought when going to college was the standards I would hold myself to, which helps My first thought when going to college was the standards I would hold myself to, which helps define what the scholarship pillar means to me. To me, scholarship represents pushing oneself to better oneself academically. To strive for greatness, even in a difficult position, because the possibilities are available. After all, my full-time job currently is as a student, and I guarantee that my work is of quality while I “work” at Longwood. Below I mention the opportunities or standards I have held myself to while at Longwood to fulfill my definition of scholarship.

While at Longwood University, the idea of scholarship has been at the forefront of my mind as I actively had one goal while at Longwood University, and that was to always be on the Dean’s List. GPA has always been important to me as a student as it is the number that sums up my academic career in a nutshell. My way of pushing myself forward is to keep my GPA over 3.5. As of this moment, it rests comfortably at 3.826. I have succeeded in my goal of staying on the Dean’s List thus far and do not plan on dropping it in my last semester.

Part of keeping a certain GPA is making everything I do up to standard, and GAND, my major, emphasizes quality work since I have been here. Besides making sure I have portfolio pieces and the skills necessary for any future job prospects I have in the future, GAND offers an internship experience for those who are skilled and want the experience. Ever since I first observed the GAND program, my goal was to make it into this internship called Design Lab. Design Lab is a student-run internship where students experience real clients and a team working environment. The teachers offer assistance occasionally, but overall it is up to the students what work is accepted and how to accomplish it. I joined this extremely educational experience for three semesters, allowing me to grow as an artist and person. It allowed me to understand my strengths and weaknesses to a point where I am actively improving to better myself. This experience is also an excellent resume piece as it gave me job experience during my busy schedule, preparing me for the future.

I was in both AP and IB courses in high school, so joining the Honors College was almost a given because it was equivalent to AP and IB courses. A stone that I wanted to step over to succeed. Like high school, it has provided me with experiences I will remember and a dream I wish to pursue. I have met wonderful people from joining, and it is a title I will hold gladly. It is because of Honors 410 that I discovered that I would like to create a business, and it may be a dream just out of reach at the moment, but it is a dream that can very likely become true.
