Scope of Care – RT/TR Service Delivery Model

The Health Protection/Health Promotion Model

The Health Protection/Health Promotion Model, developed by David R. Austin (Austin, 1998), focuses on using therapeutic recreation (RT/TR) to enhance health and well-being. In this model, health protection involves minimizing the negative impacts of illness, while health promotion encourages the pursuit of a high level of wellness (Austin, 1998). At Revive Harmony Children’s Hospital, this model will guide RT/TR service delivery by creating personalized therapeutic recreation programs that empower children to overcome health challenges and engage in meaningful recreational activities. By promoting autonomy and facilitating activities, the model assists children in achieving a balanced state of health, ultimately leading to improved quality of life and overall wellness.
